Tony Rodriquez, DPA President, Embarks on 300-Mile Bicycle Ride Through the Israeli Desert
Jerusalem, Israel – May 2007
For the first eight days in May, DPA President Tony Rodriquez will
trade the comfort of his office in West Hartford, CT to embark on a 300-mile bicycle trip through
the Israeli desert. Together with riders from around the US and around the world, Tony will
ride to raise money to benefit the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies.
The ride starts in Jerusalem, travels through Judean Hills, the Dead Sea and Negev Desert,
Kibbutz, Ketura, and ends in Eilat. In addition to the necessary pedaling the ride includes,
educational stops presenting the riders with information about some of the environmental challenges
Israel currently faces, as well as an illustration of the rich culture and history of the areas
passed through.
The Arava Institute brings Jews, Christians and Muslims from the Middle East and around the
world to study desert ecology, formulate policy on sustainable development, and work toward
preserving the delicate balance of nature that prevails in this remarkable, ancient region.
In commenting about why he is making this journey, Tony commented, “Rather than simply
talking about peace, which is a huge challenge from all sides of the conflict, AIES students
are talking about land, air and water. By bringing students together to talk and learn about
the environment, the Arava Institute is in fact helping to build bridges, understanding and
cooperation in the Middle East.”
Tony has set the goal to raise $5,000, a portion of which will go to Hazon, a New York-based
nonprofit that is doing cutting-edge work in the Jewish world to connect people across ages
and denominations through outdoor and environmental programs. Anyone interested in making a
contribution can do so online at: www.hazon.org.

accepted through July 15, 2007.
